Trading
Updated 7 October 2026, 4 min readClosing a position books its result into your balance: the price move, plus or minus the swap, minus the commission. A buy closes at the bid and a sell closes at the ask, at the price the Server has when your request arrives. You can close all of a position, part of it, or several at once, and each app puts those controls in a slightly different place.
Close one position in the web terminal
Open the Trade tab. Every row under Open Positions ends with two buttons, Edit and Close. Close sends the whole position to the market straight away, and the message Position Closed confirms it. It does not ask first, so aim with care.
The Current column shows the price the position would close at right now, and Profit shows what you would book, with swap and commission already taken into account. Read both before you press Close.
Close everything in the web terminal
In the Trade tab, the Open Positions heading has Close All Trades. It first shows how many positions it will close and their total P/L at the current price, and asks you to confirm. Each position is then closed on its own, the same way as the Close button. Positions on a closed market are left out. If some fail, the message lists which ones and why.
The Pending Orders heading has Cancel All Pending. It asks first, then cancels every pending order. Open positions are not touched.
Close part of a position
Press Edit on the position. Under the stop loss and take profit is Partial Close Volume, with a lots field, a Close Volume button and four quick buttons: 25%, 50%, 75% and All.
- The field starts at half the position, not all of it, so a slip of the mouse does not close everything.
- The line under the buttons tells you what will happen, for example "Books 0.50 lots now, 0.50 lots stay open."
- If you choose the whole volume, the button changes from Close Volume to Close All.
Whatever you type is rounded to the instrument's lot step and kept between its minimum lot and the size of the position. After a partial close the window stays open on the smaller position, and the message Partially Closed tells you how many lots are still open. The rest keeps its stop loss, take profit, trailing stop and comment.
A partial close is how you take profit at more than one price. A position has one take profit, so close a share of it yourself at the first level and let the take profit handle the rest.
On iPhone and Android
Every position card on the Trade screen has Modify and Close. Close asks first, and the question shows the amount you are about to book at the current price. Partial Close is in Modify: move the slider to the volume and confirm.
Next to the Open Positions heading is the bulk close menu: the three dots on iPhone, the Close button with an arrow on Android. It holds Close All Trades, Close All Buys, Close All Sells, Close All in Profit and Close All in Loss. Each one tells you how many positions it will close and asks you to confirm. Positions on a closed market are left out.
When a position will not close
- The market is closed. The Close button is greyed out and hovering over it reads Market closed. Wait for the instrument to open, or leave a stop loss or take profit to close it at the next price.
- No live price. A close needs a real price. If prices for the instrument pause, the terminal asks you to try again in a moment.
- The instrument has been removed. If your Broker stops offering an instrument while you hold it, the message names it and asks you to contact your Broker to close the position.
- A manager's trade. On an account that follows a money manager, the manager's positions can only be closed by the manager.
- A view-only sign-in. Signed in with an investor password, you can see positions but not close them.
For every other message, see Order warnings and what they mean.
After the close
The trade moves to the History tab with its open and close price, open and close time, duration, swap, commission and profit. The Closed By column says how it ended: Manual Close when you closed it, or Stop Loss, Take Profit, Stop Out, Robot, Copied Trade or Closed by Broker. Click the row for the full breakdown. Trade history and CSV export explains the rest.
